Reading

Throughout this term, students will participate in daily reading lessons where they will be expose to variety of engaging texts. They will be learning phonological awareness skills such as identifying syllables, rhyming words and hearing sounds in words. They will be identifying the difference between letters, words and sentences.

Students will participate in small guided reading groups and are explicitly taught comprehension strategies, letters and sounds, high frequency words and how to read and appreciate books.

Writing

This term the students will learn how to correctly form letters and start to write words and sentences. This will include how to hold a pencil properly, where to start their writing and understand that writing creates a message.

There will be a large emphasis on practicing writing their name in school writing. Students will participate in a range of experiences, which will develop their oral language and expand their vocabulary. They will begin to recount their experiences through pictures, oral language and writing.

Numeracy

During Numeracy sessions, students have opportunities to learn through ‘hands on’ activities and to develop links between everyday language and mathematical concepts. Students will have a large focus on counting and building a strong number sense for the numbers to ten and beyond.

When counting objects, we encourage our students to touch/move each object for accuracy. We encourage students to discuss and share their understandings when talking about number e.g. explaining how they solved a problem. This will assist them in expanding their mathematical vocabulary, reasoning and problem solving strategies.

Inquiry

The purpose of Inquiry is to enhance student learning by making logical links between the world we live in and the different curriculum areas. During Inquiry sessions this term, Prep students will be learning about each other and how to be a student at Lara Primary School. They will explore and understand the School Wide Positive Behaviour Program and the traffic light system.
